How do we live?

Like riding a bike or swimming, some people seem to do it gracefully, so effortlessly, never sweating it. They are confident in their beliefs, values and ethics – due perhaps to nature or nurture i.e. superior intelligence, family. or perhaps, fortune. No, they are not boorish, neither flaunt their ease through life, nor make you know how unfortunate you are compared to them. Yes, they are among us, gifted with sunny days unclouded by thought. We could, of course, be really wrong about them – but some people seem to glide through life calmly, while the rest visibly struggle. Honestly, how does one go through the valley of life and come out alive?

Humans survive and thrive because of the stories we tell ourselves: gods, the afterlife, family, community, government, economy, money. We use words, pictures, art, music and religion to give meaning to otherwise cyclical events in our lives: birth, play, work, life, death, relationships.

No, not everybody gets what we’re trying to say, neither do we always get “them”. That’s okay, but it helps to put in words the meanings we see in events. To clarify for ourselves what we experience, and should someone else get it, then a bond would have been established – a bridge to another individual . In time these small connections accumulate and establish a network of kinship with a larger community also engaged in living, and trying to make sense of it all.
